Irish Free State M27 German Type Helmet
Item: FM16

Offered is one of the great finds I made at the "War and Peace" show in the UK.  A rare M1927 Irish Free State helmet. These helmets are British manufactured copies of the German M1916 helmet made by Vickers in 1927. The helmets were issued to Irish Free State troops and were in service from 1927 to 1939.  In 1939, the helmets were re-purposed with a coat of white paint and used to the civil defense. Only 10,021 M1927 helmets were produced.  Most of the stock was destroyed and used as landfill for army barracks in the 1970's.

This helmet is ground recovered. It retains little of the original and repainted white surfaces.  The shell has surface rust, but no holes or stress fractures.  The liner is present and attached to the shell with just one rivet.  The leather band is stiff.  The liner pads and pockets are still flexible and in reasonably good shape.  Helmet is a good candidate for restoration.
